Металлоторг Did you know that the rails were invented by the ancient Romans? The first rails were two wooden ties laid parallel to wooden beams with a forged steel strip fixed on top. The distance between rail beams was 143.5 cm.

Over the years, the shape of the rails has changed. The rail was once a corner-like, two-headed bar. Modern rail is a steel beam of a special section - wide-basement section. It is this form of the rail that allows it to evenly distribute the pressure of the wheelset of the rolling stock both along the length of the rail and, subsequently, on the sleepers, and ensures sufficient lateral stability of the rail itself with different load vectors.

The main characteristic of the rail, indicating its power and strength, is the weight of one linear meter. The rails are made of carbon steel with the use of additional alloying elements that increase the quality of steel. Among them are magnesium, arsenic, manganese, titanium, and so on.

The standard length of the rail is considered to be a value of 12.5 m; 25m; 50m; 100m In fact, the length of the rail produced in steel rolling mills directly depends on its purpose and section. Let's dwell on this:

In the Russian Federation, the production of railway rails is regulated by GOST R 51685-2000

Steel Rails have following types:

1. By type

- (Р50, Р65, Р65К, Р75)

2. By way of smelting steel

- M - martin steelь

- K - converter steel

- E - electric

3. By quality category

- B - top quality thermo strengthened rails

- T1, T2 - thermo strengthened rails

- N - the rails are not heat strengthened

4. According to the method of anti-flocation treatment:

- from vacuum steel

- past controlled cooling

- past thermal exposure

5. By type of source blanks:

- from ingots

- from continuously cast billets

The location, number and diameter of the bolt holes in the neck at the ends of the rails should be as shown in Table 2.

By agreement of the sides, the rails can be made with a different arrangement, number and diameter of the bolt hole.

Bolt holes must be perpendicular to the vertical longitudinal plane of the rail.

The edges of the bolt holes should be chamfered 1.5 to 3.0 mm wide at an angle of 45 degrees.

The straightness of the rails.

Arrow deflection rails in the horizontal and vertical planes with a uniform curvature along the entire length should not exceed :

1/2500 length of rail category B;

1/2200 rail lengths of categories T1, T2 and N.

Deviations of rails from straightness along the rolling surface of the head in the vertical plane and along the lateral face of the head in the horizontal plane at a base length of 1.5 m when measuring along a chord should not respectively exceed, mm:

0.3 and 0.5 for category B rail;

0.6 and 0.8 - for rail categories T1, T2 and N.

The twisting of the rails should not exceed :

1/25000 length of rail category B;

1/10000 of the rail length of categories T1, T2 and N.

Deviations of the ends of the rails from straightness in the vertical and horizontal planes on the base length of 1.5 m should not exceed the values shown in Table 3.
